SCS Alumni Website - Chat Room Instructions

Scheduled "Group Chat Sessions" are set for... To Be Published
(they will also be included in our Events Calendar)

You might also consider this option to have a "long-distance" Reunion planning session/chat, when getting everyone together in the same place is too difficult ;-) Please check the schedule of upcoming all-alumni chats before planning a class-level get-together though... thanks!

If you've already used the SCS Alumni Chat Room, and want to skip the instructions below, use the following link to jump directly to the...
JavaChat! start / log-in window

You can also view some of the fun from one of our group chat sessions...
take a look at the Agenda posted at the bottom of this page.
We enjoyed ourselves, so consider joining-in for the next one!

Now for the instructions...

Type in your Nickname in the blue "JavaChat!" start window below, and then click the "Chat Now!" button. As a suggestion, we recommend a nickname like... "Tami77", where your SCS class year is part of the nickname -- we believe this will help everyone in the alumni chat room too.
You should NOT be prompted for a password, as this is "Optional." However, you must accept a "digital certificate" (which will appear in a small pop-up window) before you can start our Chat Room for the first time. If you do not accept this certificate, you will NOT GAIN ACCESS. Bulldog's tested this process, and it's safe.

Then, a NEW WINDOW WILL POP-UP for chatting (see the example graphic below) -- be patient, as this may take a little while to connect to the system. For this to work, you must have a Java-enable browser -- minimum level being IE5+ or Netscape 4.5+, for the two more popular programs. But, for Macintosh computers, please use the Netscape 4.7x (or higher) Web browser, as Internet Explorer for Mac is NOT COMPATIBLE with the ChattersOnline scripts.
If you don't "connect" after 30-45 seconds, give or take a little, then type "/join #SCSAlumni" into the input field, which is near the bottom of this new Chat Room window (again, note example graphic below), and then send this command to the chat server by using the enter key on your keyboard.

Here's an example graphic of what the pop-up window looks like,
and where you type to participate in the Chat:

Once the SCS Alumni Chat Room window has appeared, follow the instructions, in dark red, to establish a connection -- although this should be automatic. You may have other small "informational windows" pop-up with the title "Chat with: NickServ" -- these relate to the Chat Server central computer, or recent issues with ChattersOnline... you can just close them.

PLEASE NOTE: it is often better if you coordinate, in advance, with another user when you will be in the chat room. If not, you may be the only person in the room when you visit -- if you like chatting by yourself, then just drop in ;-)

Now that you're familiar with the DOs and DON'Ts,
here's the start, or log-in, window... Enjoy:

The Agenda from one of our Group Chat sessions:

After some fanfare and chit-chat, Bulldog kicked-off Group Chat #2 (21 July 2002).
There were a couple of chatters, and here's what we covered:

  • What do you think about our alumni Website and this Group Chat -- how often should we have these?
-- Terry66 recommended having more of these to accommodate everyone.

  • What issue(s) would you like to address first... Website design, content (what's written and such), or photos available?
-- no issues raised here... were pleased with the state and direction of the SCS Alumni Website.

  • Anything you'd like to see added, or removed, from our site?
-- List names, e-mails, and contact information (sort of a "SCS Yellow Pages" feature at our site); informed the group that this information currently exists at our "virtual office," which is password-controlled.
-- Create a "Teacher Section," with "then & now" information; this sounds great, but need volunteers... Terry66 agreed to investigate.
-- Create a "standard" reunion questionaire that people can access on the website. HOWEVER, this needs to be class driven, and NOT Alumni Group managed; as a result of this chat session, a new "survey" and "reunion planning checklist" were added to this site.

  • Have you visited the new "History" and "Calendar" pages?
-- several had visited these pages.

  • Have you seen the new SCS photos (one from 1922!) and Class photos (1932, 1957, and 1973) that were recently added?
-- several had visited these pages.

  • Have you visited the "Today in History" page?
-- several had visited this page.

  • What do you think about an all-alumni newsletter (maybe called "The Bulldog Bulletin") that we would mail-out once a year?
-- although everyone was "in favor"; there were no new ideas discussed, or volunteers.

  • On July 16th, we accidentally "zeroed-out" the Guest Book. If you made an entry between June 1st and July 15th, it's no longer there... sorry. Please head back to the Guest Book so classmates and friends can find you.

  • Any other issues you'd like to discuss?

  • For those of you that are curious about the identity of "Bulldog," review all aspects and pages of the Alumni site... five clues are posted in different places. Enjoy the hunt.
